Detection of the sound fields of ultrasonic sources freely available on the market: Estimation of the risk potential

Research project of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection in cooperation with the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Medizinische Physik und Technik (GAMPT) mbH

Project reference number FKZ 3620S72412,
Start 2020

Ultrasound devices for home use can be freely purchased via international trading platforms. The freely available devices include devices for prenatal examinations, simple therapy devices and cosmetic devices. In this study, these devices were analysed using measurement technology and the risk potential was determined. Relevant guidelines and legal regulations on ultrasound protection as well as scientific publications were researched in advance. The aim was to conduct a representative study by categorising the products on the market.

The sixteen products selected focussed on cosmetic devices. Their technological principles and mechanisms of action are usually inadequately explained in the product descriptions, as their development and marketing are driven by strong market interests. Only a few independent works deal with ultrasound-based cosmetic devices. However, the existing publications point to numerous complications and risks associated with the use of ultrasound, particularly in the head area.

The ultrasound parameters of the products were determined in standardised tests and compared with known thermal and mechanical threshold values. To assess the intended and foreseeable use, the exposure time was also evaluated. The results show a predominantly high hazard potential in free application.

Non-destructive testing of stringed instruments

In collaboration with the State Institute for Music Research of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, a purely acoustic method for measuring historical sound bodies has been developed in recent years[1]. This method has the great advantage that historical sound bodies can be measured and made audible without mechanical stress.

The method evaluates the sound body and its periphery with the help of a room acoustic impulse response measurement (AIR). A logarithmic sweep is used as the test signal. The measurement method was compared with the standard method, the hammer test.
